I climbed out of the well and walked down the familiar path to the house. Inside those rooms I had dreamt up plans as a boy, before I ran away. The woman I had been watching the past few days was kneeling in the garden, planting potatoes.

Have a handful, she whispered, and to be polite I accepted the sprouting tubers. No, she said, don’t tell anyone. You know how worked up people get when it comes to the homeless! Hospitality is a crime in this country, so you’re best to stay away, she said.

The woman in the potato patch told me her name was Maja, like the sister I abandoned 20 years ago. Maja, she said, shaking my hand, and then she pointed at her dog. She whistled and called for it: Paradiso. That’s its name, she said. A strange name for a dog, I thought. Paradiso! The soil grew pungent when the dog came racing across it to the woman. A craving for coffee urged me closer; perhaps we could have a little chat inside?
